Import GIFI Data from an Accounting Program
You can import GIFI data from accounting or spreadsheet programs into a return.

The imported file must be in a specific GIFI format, as required by the CRA. The GIFI format (*.gfi) is currently supported by a number of different accounting programs. Consult the user guide or the Help of the accounting program that you use to determine how to create this type of file. Below is a list of the most commonly used accounting programs that create file formats specific to the GIFI:
- Acomba
- CaseWare
- DREAM
- Pro System Fx
- Simply Accounting
Corporate Taxprep also supports the import of .csv and .txt format files created in a spreadsheet program, the most frequently used program being Excel™.
Instructions for importing an Excel file into Corporate Taxprep are available on our Web site. Consult the page GIFI - Importing a Microsoft Excel™ File.

To import GIFI data from an accounting or spreadsheet program, proceed as follows:
- Display the return into which you want to import the GIFI data.
- On the File menu, click Import Data, then GIFI File.
- Select the file that you want to import.
- Click Open.
When the data import is completed, an import log will display showing the results of the import operation.

When importing, certain items will be imported as an absolute value (i.e. the value multiplied by –1). These items are contra items, like the provision for doubtful accounts, accumulated depreciation, dividends declared, closing inventory and extraordinary items.
The negative sign is not required unless you want to show a reduction in the credit or debit, as Corporate Taxprep will automatically subtract these items.
Note: When data is imported, any amounts that include cents will be rounded to the nearest dollar.
